The reason I created this blog is to relate Sir Isaac Newtons “3 Laws of Physics” to the Pitching and Hitting motions and how important “Ground Force is to Bat Speed, Arm health, Velocity and Power”

Over the years coaches and trainers all agreed that using the legs is one of the keys to success for hitters and pitchers…..but what does “Use your legs” mean and How do you use them?

Let’s understand that  “Using the legs” is better described as “Creating Ground Force or engaging the Lower Half” because the “Lower Half” also includes the hips not just the legs. These are terms that better suits what we are discussing.

Let me start off by saying “Ground Force” is what separates the Elite athletes from the average. The more efficient GF that an athlete can create the faster they  move. And what I mean by efficient GF is the ability for the athlete to transfer this force into usable force to their respective sport.  Hitting and pitching in both BASEBALL & SOFTBALL the elite athlete creates a linear motion (Force) that transfers into a rotational reaction at foot strike.

Here we go!

Sir Isaac Newton’s first Law of Motion

The Law of Inertia

(I’ve cut Newton’s Laws down to what is relevant to this conversation….Hope you don’t mind.)

Newton’s First Law of Motion partially states that an object will remain in motion until acted upon by another force. Well we all know what GRAVITY is (especially us older people…LOL) and what it does to objects. But the force I’m talking about is the front leg landing when hitting and pitching. The front leg landing is the most important force that “Transfers” the linear energy from the stride or linear phase (Linear energy = Gravitational energy + Leg Drive energy) into rotational energy”.  At foot strike….. the SEPARATION of the UPPER and LOWER body maximizes with a firm front leg landing. Studies show that higher velocity pitchers have greater separation angles than lower velocity pitchers. This is why coaches say you need strong legs or a strong lower half!

Sir Isaac Newton’s Second Law of Motion

“Acceleration is produced when a force acts upon a mass”

Years ago there was a separation in theory on pitching styles that pertained to the Lower Half and to this day is still somewhat of a debate. It was …..either you are the old “Tall and Fall Guy” which means you didn’t create a force from the mound but just lifted up your leg and reached out and landed causing the hips to rotate. And there was the “Drop and Drive” type that actually loaded the back leg to create a force into the front landing leg. Kinda like all these Elite pitchers do! (See illustration below)

Now understand this……when we try to jump high (Vertical Jump) we don’t keep our legs straight…..we bend them to load so we can jump higher! This allows us to create more FORCE to ACCELERATE our MASS. Again look at the picture above and notice what the back keg is doing………LOADING!   All these Elite pitchers  pitched with Elite velocity and relatively healthy long careers.

Now take a look at the illustration below……

More and more studies are showing this info is instrumental to arm health and elevated velocity. Meaning they are using GROUND FORCE to ACCELERATE their MASS which makes them land harder.

We have to understand that pitching like hitting is a chain reaction…..one motion leads to the next. But the biggest point I want to make in this section is that PITCHING & HITTING IS A TRANSFER OF ENERGY …..IF THE LOWER HALF DOES NOT PROVIDE SUFFICIENT ENERGY TO TRANSFER…….THE ARM HAS TO DO MORE WORK!

Look at this study!

Sir Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion

“For every action there is a equal and opposite reaction”

This one is not hard to comprehend…… The study above states that the pitchers with the highest velocities “Drive Harder and Land Harder”. So creating more force of the drive leg will cause more force on the landing……That’s just plain common sense!

Now lets go back to the understanding that PITCHING AND HITTING IS A CHAIN REACTION….ONE MOTION FUELS THE NEXT AND EACH MOTION BECOMES FASTER THAN THE LAST.

So what this means is if the Hitter/Pitcher creates more energy from the back leg this will cause the front leg to land harder and with a good front leg bracing action this will cause the hips to rotate faster which causes more separation between the lower half and the upper torso which causes the upper torso to rotate faster…… eventually this will lead to more bat speed and more arm speed that directly relates to higher velocity!…..WHEW!

This is what the Arizona Diamondbacks sent me after purchasing 8 trainers from me:

Rich,
“Thank you for your wonderful product, King of the Hill. It has turned out to be a very valuable tool for our pitchers throughout the entire Arizona Diamondback organization. As pitching coaches, we are always seeking to maximize a pitcher’s strengths and to make a pitcher’s delivery more consistent. The King of the Hill has allowed us to do both. The King of the Hill allows us to teach each pitcher how to properly and most effectively engage his lower half throughout his delivery so that he can maximize his strength, maximize his power, and do so consistently. The audio “DOUBLE-CLICK,” which the King of the Hill provides when the pitcher uses his lower half correctly, allows immediate positive feedback after each pitch. Because of the immediate feedback, a pitcher can make pitch-by-pitch adjustments, which will allow him to establish and maintain good physical habits, creating consistency within his own delivery. I would recommend this tool to anyone serious about teaching a pitcher how he can properly engage and maximize his lower half, which will lead to increased strength and stamina, even velocity.
Thank you for your work and your product”

KING OF THE HILL-KING OF THE SWING-QUEEN OF THE HILL GROUND FORCE TRAINERS

Why are all these MLB organizations and top college programs are buying into my 3 trainers?

Because they are smart by knowing everything starts in the lower half and not everyone utilizes the energy that can be produced when done correctly to energize the whole chain reaction…..even the pros!                     Look Below!

Everyone by now should understand that Pitching and Hitting have a lot of things in common. Both are “Chain reaction events”……meaning the end results are based on patterns that happen before the “release or impact”. And both start at the ground……or at least need to.

Good scouts & coaches can tell if a players is using their “Lower Half” for the most part.  These athletes that utilize their “Lower Half” are recognized by the scouts as the more projectable, more powerful athletes and most desirable……. No coach can deny this.

This is my opinion…….

Hitting starts with a movement backwards called the load followed by a “Ground Force” caused by the back leg. This Ground Force provides the energy that when the front leg braces up correctly…. transfers the energy through the hips causing the core/upper body to rotate at a faster rate (Elastic Energy) that in turn causes the shoulders/hands to deliver the bat at an accelerated rate…….Kinetic Chain Reaction.

Look at how Bryce Harper, Frank Thomas and MLB hit….all have the back foot off the ground which is caused by energy being transfered.

Pitching also starts at the ground…..As the lift leg is going up we should be moving our hips forward causing a pelvic load….. this is what is considered the “Gravitational Phase”…. as the lower half moves forward (Loaded Phase) we set up what is considered the “Drive Phase” where the back leg needs to create force against the rubber. When the front leg braces up correctly this energy is transferred to the hips that separate from the upper body causing an “Elastic Energy” that accelerates the “Upper Torso” and this in turn accelerates the arm action that creates faster velocity of the ball……..Kinetic Chain Reaction….

Look at Chapman, Clemens, Gooden and Ryan….all have PHENOMINAL LEG DRIVE!

So you see that both are somewhat common in that they both are “Kinetic Chain Reactions” and both start from the ground”

Know this! “Elite Athletes are Elite Athletes because they utilize Ground Force better that average athletes!”……..PERIOD!

Hitting…… Here is what I’m getting at. They days of “Squash the Bug” or “Pulling your knee forward” while hitting are OVER!   We do not create energy from just rotating or the back foot of pulling!  We need to create a force that will transfer to the bat……and this energy is considered “Ground Force” that is caused by what the back leg & foot does. Without this force the bat speed suffers. This “Ground Force” is what causes the back foot to leave the ground…it isn’t from lifting it.

Pitching…..I’m getting away from any coach that tells my son or daughter not to create a force from the back leg! This robs the pitcher from the most powerful source of KINETIC ENERGY that causes the hips to separate……and this is the biggest “Torque point” that causes exceptional velocity.  Also take this “Ground Force” away and arm stress multiplies because the arm has to do all the work to create velocity!!!!

GROUND FORCE IS KING!

DONT LET YOUR COACH “ROB” YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER OF THEIR ATHLETICISM! TRAIN THEM LIKE ELITE ATHLETES!!!

Increase the “Ground Force”…………. increase the end result……..BAT SPEED AND ABSOLUTE VELOCITY!!!

Train like elite athletes…..and may the “FORCE BE WITH YOU!!!”

But The Fruit Loop Theory will make every pitcher….heck it will make every player better in every sport…..Guaranteed!

Question? If you throw a “No Hitter” or go “4-4” at the plate and ate “Fruit Loops” for breakfast…..what are you going to eat the next time you play?…..It’s a no brainer…..FRUIT LOOPS! So you relate winning to eating Fruit Loops!

SONY DSC

Think about this……why do home teams usually if not always have better records at home than on the road….it’s because they’re comfortable being able to do what they usually do when they play at home….They are comfortable. But when they are on the road and in a uncomfortable situation they don’t usually perform as well.

This is the reason ( Coaches job) we should develop a plan/routine that we will be able to take on the road.

I was able to experience Justin Verlander’s routine 2 years in a row while I was at the Tigers Spring Training at Lakeland, Florida. It was exactly the same routine…run to loosen up with the team on the field…….core work on the side, arm care…..ect…ect. Then short toss with a catcher…..a couple drills and then long toss. After that it was grab a drink and head to the bullpen. Then in the bullpen in Arizona I was watching the Phillies get stomped by the Diamondbacks and the Phillies went through 4 or 5 pitchers out of the bullpen….each had different routines that got them ready and comfortable.

My pitchers learn this during individual sessions….each session starts with the same warmup and drills before we get to the issues that need work……Period. During this period they get comfortable because of this ROUTINE. This is their “FRUIT LOOPS”…..AND WHEN ON THE ROAD THEY WILL PERFORM BETTER BECAUSE OF IT!

So when we become “Comfortable in an Uncomfortable situation” the majority of the time we will be more successful.

So have all your player develop a “FRUIT LOOP ROUTINE”….it will make every player a better player!

One of the things that can be in your everyday routine is to train with the KING OF THE HILL, QUEEN OF THE HILL AND KING OF THE SWING……MLB teams along with Big D1 colleges are quickly understanding how important “Ground Force” is to performance….Ground Force is what makes elite athletes….ELITE ATHLETES!……DON’T BE AVERAGE…..BE ELITE!

Ground Force Trainers!

Coach D

Hello Coaches, Players and Trainers,

A topic that I’ve wanted to put my 2 cents in for awhile…..

Understand this! The younger the player the less developed his body is the less stress he can take before he breaks.  I know….COMMON SENSE!

When we speed up the arm it also increases stress…..I know more COMMON SENSE!

So this “Weighted Ball Trend”……….Do we need  to take a step back and use some COMMON SENSE?

I’m not bashing “Weighted Ball Drills” I’m just trying to point out the obvious…….If the Lower Half does not do its job the arm has to do more work and “Arm Stress Elevates and Velocity Declines”…..COMMON SENSE!

With the studies that have been done (that seems like coaches are ignoring) it is proven that…..INCREASED LEG DRIVE THAT TRANSFERS INTO THE FRONT BRACING LEG AND THROUGH THE HIPS…….GET THIS…..DECREASES ARM STRESS (DAMN!) AND INCREASES…VELOCITY!!! (YEEEHHHAW!)

                                       new website pic

Here’s a blurb from a study from 2 SMART Dudes:

Kibler and Chandler calculated that a 20% decrease in kinetic energy delivered from  (back leg drive) to the hip and trunk to the arm requires a 34% increase in the rotational velocity of the shoulder to impart the same amount of force to the hand.

IF THERE’S A LICK OF COMMON SENSE IN THAT BODY OF YOURS UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND TRAIN THE LOWER HALF FIRST ………THEN THE UPPER HALF!….CAPS LOCK FOR A REASON!

classic lower halfs cFinal Drive

Sure this is leading somewhere!

I’ve developed a training device that will give your pitchers instant “Audible Feedback and Feel” when they engage the “LOWER HALF” The Lower Half is the most under developed phase of the delivery…..why? Because we can’t give them a “Verbal Cue or Drill” that translates to what should happen on a mound!

Coach Dan Hubbs, Pitching Coach at USC said:

This is why MLB teams (Indians 9, Cubs 7, Nationals 7, Rays 7…ect!) have their pitchers training on the KINGOFTHEHILL!

They know that the “Lower Half” needs to work otherwise performance and longevity suffers!

Here are just 6 of many Endorsements:

Good Monday Morning to ALL!                                                                                                                                                            cropped-LOGO.png

Todays blog is on the topic: The workings of the “LOWER HALF” of Pitchers in “3 PHASES”

One of the things I’ve been searching for is the ideal model of a high velocity pitcher’s lower half pattern. I’ve watched at least 100 videos of this type (90+ mph) of MLB pitcher with a focus on what the hips, legs and feet do during their delivery. More and more they look extremely similar in these patterns that I understand. Here is a quick description of what I’ve observed.   Once the 3 phases are understood it is tremendously easier to train the “Lower Half” ( I have 3 phenomenal drills that are included with my trainer).                                                                                                                                red trainer tall pic

Phase #1  Gravitational energy/Pelvic Load

Phase #2   Staying loaded like the Pros!

Phase #3   The Final Drive

=======================================

Here are the 3 phases explained in my opinion.

Phase #1: Gravitational Energy/ Pelvic Load

While we are standing tall on the mound, our first initial movement forward is created by lifting your front leg – which puts an imbalance in your posture, and causes you to go forward. The movement forward shouldn’t be from the lift leg going “Up down and out” to start the movement forward. Notice how Randy Johnson is moving forward with his knee at peak height.

baseball-hall-of-fame-2015bd1aff8f543fc1bddf62bc6b5cc72bed

As you are going forward the higher your leg lift while moving forward the higher the center of gravity is, the more momentum you will create which is what we want. We do not create any force from our muscles at this point because we are not in a mechanical position to be able to…….yet. It is strictly Gravity.

Phase #2         Staying Loaded like the Pros!

Once our lift leg starts to come down (Still Gravity), we should be moving forward and at this point. Both knees need to stay as close together as possible while moving forward…almost looks like you are sitting. This is the LOADED PHASE. Look at the back leg on all these pitchers….. all are in a loaded state ready to explode! This sets you up for the next phase……..LEG DRIVE!

classic lower halfs c

Phase #3    The FINAL DRIVE

At this point the pitcher is ready to create what is considered the “Leg Drive Phase” or “The Final Drive”!

The pitcher will create a force against the rubber and ground that thrusts the lower body forward into landing of the front foot. Without this “Final Drive” each one of the pitchers shown would not be able to stay loaded like they show in the pictures…their front leg would have to open up earlier in their stride which would take them out of their “Loaded Phase” for late hip rotation! The energy created by “Leg Drive” transfers directly to the pelvis and in turn, upon lead foot landing…forces the opposite hip forward. This is where the action called “Separation” peaks and supercharges the upper body from elastic energy, and turbocharges the arm whip to create peak velocity!

Final Drive

So in closing, lets look back at the way I described the pitching motion broke down into 3 major phases…

  1. Stride and Landing
  2. Upper Torso acceleration
  3. Arm action
Each phase fuels the next….each one faster than the last!
Without a powerful lower half the next 2 phases will struggle to perform at extreme performance requirements.
So…without “Leg Drive” the “Lower Half” is nothing!

Can you tell the difference between using your legs or not?

Your lower half is “NOTHING” without leg drive!!!!!! How do you teach and increase this necessary pattern?

Watch the short video and get an idea why the MLB is using my trainer.

With multiple reps you will program your legs to create “Leg Drive”

Then with a turn of the wrench you can increase the compression force to make you drive harder and in turn……

“Do the same in the game”

It’s this easy!

CIMG5330

Hitting and pitching are more similar than most think…..Both are what is considered “Chain Reactions” meaning the energy you create from the legs (Ground Force) transfers thru the hips then core and into a rotational energy that rotates the upper body and arms to the bat. The professionals all do this extremely efficiently…this is why they hit “BOMBS”. The most important fact of hitting is that is starts from the legs….But how is this done?…….”GROUND FORCE” COMING FROM THE BACK LEG.

This is the “Hitter Version” to cause the back leg to create ground force the correct way!

The MLB teams will be getting the second training device that has no equal…..Instant feedback if you are doing it correctly with the ability to increase the force……so you will create more POWER from your lower half!

When are you going to want more power…..done the right way…..from the ground up!

This is a proto-type that will go into production soon!
